Driving Home for Christmas....

Hello Friends

I do love to make handmade gifts for family and friends at Christmas, I just had to make one of these after seeing the gorgeous creations by Kath Stewart and Richele Christensen. I wanted to make one, but not the same and so I used Tim Holtz's Home for the Holidays and Winter Wonderland die sets to make my 'Driving Home for Christmas' shadow box.  I have been listening to Chris Rea .....

I did not do a step by step as I got a bit carried away but both Kath and Richele (links above) have put very comprehensive tutorials together and I more or less, followed those tutorials.

I used the largest box from the Vignette tray set (12" x 6"), adding some Idea-ology Design Tape to the edges.  The sky was painted with Salty Ocean Distress Paint and the snow drifts at the bottom were made from white card and then coated with Clear Rock Candy Distress Glitter using Matte Medium to adhere it to the card.

I absolutely adore this car die from the Home for Christmas die set and the 'snowfall' in the background was created using the background die from the Winter Wonderland set.  The Merry Christmas and all the trees and the 'snow drifts' at the bottom of the frame come from the Home for Christmas die set.
I added a set of lights to the inside back of the tray (as Kath and Richele did), drilled a hole through to the back for the battery pack to sit on the outside back.  The letters on the top are Tim's Idea-ology Typography letters in white - I painted the front of each letter in Festive Berries Distress Paint and set them into Distress Grit Paste with some added glitter.
Here is a view with the lights on.

My Son and his lovely Wife have just moved to a new house in Brighton and it is a bit like a building site at the moment, whilst they renovate, so I hope this will brighten up a room over the Christmas period!
My Dad had a car similar to this retro one, I have such fond memories of it and the cottage that he and my Mum built themselves, in Canada, for their retirement!

I have just got the new Gift Card Package die after seeing all the inspiration Tim's team have been sharing so I will be back with some of those in a few days, I hope!

I would like to enter this into That's Crafty! Tis the Season Challenge where they are asking to see festive creations.

Over at Simon Says Monday Challenge, the challenge is Christmas/Winter Holiday, so I am adding my Vignette to that challenge too....

I am also entering into Country View Challenge - Christmas, with the option of Reds, Greens and Rust.  I don't have any rust but there is lots of red and green so I hope that's OK!

As always, thanks for your visit (and comment), I really do appreciate it!

Hugs, Anne xx

  8. Haha, as soon as I read your post title, that song popped into my head and now that one line is just stuck there. lol. Such a wonderful idea for a Christmas gift and wow it sure is amazing! All the beautiful shimmering snowbanks and the bright blue winter sky! My favourite detail is the Christmas tree on top of the car, oh what memories that brings!

I think my Mom and Dad had almost exactly the same car as well, isn't that something! Look at all that snow, there was a time when we had that kind of snowfall every year! We've just had a little snow this week, and I am super thankful. We've had a green Christmas now every year for at least a decade and I'll be happy for the change this year. sending hugs :)

  16. oh Anne!! You totally have pulled at my heart strings with this piece!
I was ready to tell you how very much I love that retro car die and how cool your whole piece is when you shared that photo from your folks- well, a flood of memories filled my head as they do at this time of the year, seeing that car and the cottage in Canada. Reminds me of where i grew up and a similar car that we had as well.
I am sure your son and dil will love and cherish this special piece as it is just fabulous!!Brilliant really!

  17. Anne, I have seen both Kath's and Richele's versions of this, and you have really done a beautiful job with their inspiration! I love that you used the car die--that brings such a sense of nostalgia to this vignette. I adore the colors you've used for your car!

Your starry sky is amazing! Last night I went out to watch the meteor shower and this is what the night sky looked like, for real! The snowy hills are fabulous, and you don't have to shovel! Wow, Anne, this is a real stunner, and I know your son and his lovely wife are delighted to have this in their new home!

PS We had the same station wagon when I was very young, and I remember laying in the back watching the trees pass by when we would come home from long trips to the city.

    Sending hugs!
