CC3C #12 - Distress Photo Tinting

A quick post - I am getting this in by the seat of my pants!  The Compendium of Curiosities 3 Challenge this time is to use the Tim Holtz Distress Photo Tinting Technique which can be found on Page 41 of Tim's CC3 book.  If you do not have your copy yet, you can get a signed copy from Tim HERE.  Linda Ledbetter and her Curiosity Crew have come up with some fantastic inspiration on the theme.

This is an even numbered challenge and that means the Sponsor this time is the lovely Linda Coughlin of the Funkie Junkie and Linda is offering one lucky winner a $25 voucher to spend in her on line store.

Tim and Mario have also generously donated a large prize of Tim goodies for one person chosen by the Curiosity Crew, as their favourite.

My lovely paternal Grandparents lived their whole lives in Aberdeen, Scotland and apart from wartime they had never travelled outside of Scotland.  In 1960 they won a large sum of money on the Pools, which allowed them to visit their youngest Son who lived in England (shown in the photo with is beautiful wife) and their eldest Son, my Dad who lived in Canada.  I decided use my favourite photo of them on their travels.....

....to make this scrapbook page, using Tim's Distress Photo Tinting Technique.  Grandad always worn a dark brown cloth cap, no matter what he wore - and yes, he always had a cigarette stuck to his bottom lip too...  The stamping on the photo below says ' it's all perspective '

A close up of the tinted photo, I cannot give you details of how I achieved this, as it would not be fair on Tim.

The page relates to their trip from Scotland to Canada, you may just be able to see the map of the UK and North America.

This image shows ephemera that they might have collected along the way.

To create the page I used Kraft cardstock, burlap, lots of Tim's Ephemera, a die cut postage stamp frame coated with Clear Rock Candy Distress Paint), die cut leaves to represent early Autumn in Canada, an Idea-ology metal word frame (capture life's moments) and lots of Remnant Rubs.  The map backing page is from Tim's Collage paper pad.

Thanks for looking, my apologies if I have not got round to visiting you this last week or so, I have just been a little under the weather.  Take care and I hope to see you soon.  Hugs, Anne xx

  1. Oh Anne...what a wonderful family keepsake. I love how you've taken that photograph and mounted it on such a very cool canvas with so many beautifully displayed and collaged ephemera pieces. What a great backdrop for that beautiful family picture. I love that you used an actual family photo. They mean so much more, don't they? Your grandparents were so cute! Beautiful job on the photo tinting. I love the "life" you breathed into that photograph!! The placement of the word band and the sentiment on it are perfect! Thanks for joining us and sharing your lovely art with all of us at CC3C. <3 Candy

  4. What a great photo to start the project with Anne, this is a lovely memory of their trip. The brown cloth cap and cigarette made me laugh, that is how I remember older members of my family too. How observant of Elaine to notice where it was taken, I guess that may be Robin Hood in the background then?? Mo x

  22. Hi Anne, sorry to hear you've not been quite yourself and hope you are feeling better.
Lovely story and photo. This is an interesting technique and not a new one. We have a photograph of parents when they were young and it had been tinted in exactly the same way, by hand (obviously before they had coloured film).
Hope you have a great weekend and happy crafting, Angela x

  23. The beautiful personal story behind this makes it even more special Anne and your tinting is really sensitively done to compliment the image. Elaine's right with spotting the location and Robin is still there in Nottingham, looking pretty much unchanged since your Grandparents' photo was taken! Hope you get some benefit from this week and you both have a good week ahead. Jenny xxx

  24. LOVE the story behind your stunning project! OMG, a Canadian connection! Oh ya, we're almost family. You've captured so beautifully the journey they made. Love the photo you chose. I have been saving photo's from my husband's side of the family. His Aunt has 1000's of old photo's considering his family left England to help settle Fort Victoria in Beautiful BC. She has photo's before the famous Empress Hotel was built. Love how crafting inspires lovely memories.

  39. Anne, this is a wonderful treasure you've created that I hope you will display for all to see rather than hide away in a scrapbook. I LOVE that photo and your tinting is great. It's such a joy to share in everyone's stories as we go through this challenge. Well done!

  41. This is amazing, Anne - I have got some old photos which have been tinted, and they have the same other-worldly feel about them. This is a great technique! I love how you've used it just on parts of the photo, to draw attention to lovely bits of family history. Such a great idea. You've made a very nice layout too. Isn't it nice that these days we have the opportunity to do something with our old family photos and give them a new lease of life and hopefully for the new generations to enjoy, rather than just sticking them in a drawer.

Thanks for your visit and your lovely comment - I'm so glad you like my recent projects! The felt poppies are now sewn together and fixed to a hair clip, and they have some shiny gold transparent beads in the centres which really sets them off! Blog post and photos to follow shortly. I am so enjoying the felt making!
