Mini Album Makers August Challenge

Hello Friends

It is time for a new challenge at Mini Album Makers and, as always we would love to have you join in the challenge.

Our Rules are very straightforward : Any Handmade Book goes.  Enter any form of handmade mini album, scrapbook, journal or book art.  Our focus is on completed works, so no layouts or journal spreads that are not part of a complete handmade book project.

Since Eileen Hull is our Sponsor for this month, I have used her new Wrapped Journal die, along my my favourite Tim Holtz fabric to create a journal.
I used Eileen's new die (Sizzix 662816) and Tim Holtz fabric from his Correspondence range from a year or so ago (which Eileen has just reminded me (thank you!), was picked up when she took me to a fabulous Joann's shop in Phoenix, Arizona, earlier this year!).  I also used a piece of Tim's Idea-ology range for the closure.
I attached the fabric to one side of  heavyweight card with Multi Matte Medium, left it to dry overnight and die cut it. Below is a view of the outside.
A view from the inside.  I attached the inside fabric separately, again with Multi Matte Medium and left this overnight to dry and then machine stitched all around the edges, with straight and zig zag stitches.  The glue works well but if the journal is going to get lots of use, the stitching holds the fabric in place quite securely.
I die cut Tim Holtz's Stitched Slots for the inside front cover.  I also stamped Tim's ticket stamps and die cut them with the matching dies.  I added an Idea-ology tag to finish it off.  I also made an envelope for the back of the journal with Tim's Correspondence papers.  I love that he has matching fabrics and papers.  I used 1mm red elastic to string the journal, ready for the signatures.
I created two signatures by covering card with more of the fabric, for the covers, stitching around the edges and attaching the inserts to the covers using a simple pamphlet stitch. The covers measure 6.3/4" x 4.7/8 and the insert pages are just slightly smaller.
I often make pocketed wallet inserts for my journals.  Again, I covered the card with fabric, before creating the wallet.  There is a plan below should you wish to create one of these.
To make the wallet, start by cutting heavyweight card to 11.1/2" x 5.1/4".  Score at 2.1/2", 5.3/4" and 9.1/4".  Score on the long side at 1/2" - this creates the fold up pieces which form the lower edge of the wallet insert.

I like to trim the two side edges by rounding them as shown below.  However, if you prefer the pockets to be straight you can just leave them as is.  Your trimmed piece should look like the sample below.  Fold the sides in and then glue the small tabs, at the bottom, to the outside of the folded in edges, as shown above.

As I mentioned earlier, Eileen Hull is our wonderful Sponsor this month and she is offering one of her new dies - Journaling Cards - Hearts (Sizzix 662812)  to one lucky winner.

  2. Love the use of fabric on card Anne, i've not tried the multi matt medium to fix it before so Thank you for the tip. Your theme is so full of wanderlust. Your pocket wallet inserts are a very handy size, I hope you've saved that measured piece as a template.. (I have a cupboard full of templates hee hee!)
Those added hanging charms make the perfect companion. A beautiful wrap journal indeed. Thank you for sharing this marvellous piece.
    Creative hugs Tracey xx

    1. Thank you Tracey! Ha, ha, I have tons of templates too but I have made loads of these and have the measurements in my head now (which is a bit dangerous given my poor memory - lol) xx

  3. Oh wow Anne, this is awesome! LOVE the fabric (is it available in the UK?), and almost makes me want to invest in a sewing machine. In fact the only thing stopping me is that I'd have nowhere to put it!
Loving the wallet too. Thanks for including the measurements x

    1. Thank you Sammy! Yes, some of Tim's fabric is available from The Cotton Patch - www.cottonpatch.co.uk Just search for Tim Holtz and you will find lots of beautiful designs! You don't really need to sew the fabric on, a good fabric glue will do the job and you can add some faux stitching with a pen..... xxx

  5. Gorgeous journal, Anne. I love Tim's fabric too. I always worry about damaging my machine, stitching through card. Do you use a separate needle? Maybe I should invest in more machine needles as I would really love to try using fabric to cover a journal.

    1. Thank you Julie! I keep a needle just for sewing through card and fabric together, and I stitch slowly. It does blunt the needle eventually and it could ruin other fabric, which is why I keep one for card. The machine I use for craft is not an expensive one but I have not had any problems so far! xx

  12. Really love your use of fabric. I'm curious: did you cut the fabric the same size as your base and just glue stitch? If so are you seeing any fraying or will the matte medium prevent that? Thanks!

    1. Thank you Michelle! I glued the fabric to a piece of mountboard (matboard) and then die cut it. I added the fabric to the inside afterwards and cut around the edges. If you use matte medium or something like Mod Podge to glue the fabric down, then once you are finished with the cutting, take some of the glue on your finger and go all around the edges. It gives a nice neat finish and will prevent the fabric from fraying too much. Hope that helps! x

  19. Seriously, I work ten minutes away from a Joann's. I go in there when we are at the big shopping mall buying the kids clothes, but usually leave empty handed! I always forget to look at the fabric since I don't sew as much anymore. I'm going to go on a hunt! :) I just adore the way you used this fabric. Your journal is absolutely splendid and what a great reminder of your trip to the States. I'm totally inspired by this Anne! Big hugs, Autumn

  26. Wow! Anne, once again you have managed to leave me in the unflattering postition with my jaw gaping wide in amazement! What beautiful work you do, and a fabulous reminder of your trip to lovely Arizona. All these details are fabulous, and I really appreciate the little pocket plan you shared. Love the stitching, too! So perfect in every way! Is that some real airmail on that wallet, or part of the fabric design? I just found out that one of my Capon friends used TH fabrics on her quilts, so I got her addicted to the Tim Holtz Addicts FB group. Sending hugs!

  33. As always, a stunningly detailed project. As soon as I saw this & you mentioned TH Fabric, I remembered that picture of you from last year, Happy Face, with an armful of fabric! I could tell you were in 7th heaven! What a splendid use you've made of the purchase, and I always love when I see a project that uses fabric and sewing type articles. You've put so much work into the finite details, and it certainly shows. Lots of color, imagination and terrific use of the dies to carry out your theme. Always enjoy looking at the tutorial pictures you take the time to share as well. Hope you had a fabulous & happy birthday too! TFS & Hugs
