It is time for a new challenge over at A Vintage Journey and this month the talented Tracy is our host. Here is what Tracy has to say:
Whether a frame, embellishments, or die cuts, drawn squares, doodles or windows, lets see where inspiration takes you, lets get all squared up and show how creative those right angles can look! Show us your squared up pieces in a vintage; shabby; mixed media; art journalling; industrial; timeworn or steampunk style.
I have only used these Seth Apter square dies once before, HERE, so I wanted to give them another airing! I used a square wooden seed pot that I found in a sale, to create a timeworn tea light holder.
I have a few photo step by steps to share with you.
I started with a bargain square shaped seed planter.
I die cut four sets of square shapes using Seth Apter's Robo Square die set and some heavy black cardstock.
The squares were coated randomly with DecoArt Media Texture Sand Paste.
The shapes were all coloured with DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic paints in Paynes Grey, Diarylide Yellow, Quinacridone Gold and Cobalt Teal Hue - all quite randomly.
The square block was painted first with Indigo Blu's Artists Matt Acrylic Paint in Leather Corset and let it dry before stippling over with Imagination Craft's Texture Patina paint. I wanted to leave quite a lot of the gorgeous brown colour showing underneath.
Here is a view from the top with a night light inside. There were a couple of squares left over, so I made a little lid to go on top.
Finally I added some square feet made from beads and painted in Leather Corset.

I love how you used the robo squares and rusted them and how they fitted beautifully onto the box edges and talking about that little seed planter box you created a magnificent patina finish on it, it's so effective. I love that you then added a candle and transformed it into a fabulous piece of home decor. Magnificent work my friend xxx

ReplyDeleteAnne, I love your grungy side! You have made a fabulously aged project out of a ???? what the heck? I've never seen one of these before! Your rusted robo squares are perfectly corroded (pinned to save your recipe) and look even more amazing on your patina'd backdrop! What a fabulous tealight holder! I have got to get my hands on that robo square die. Oh the possibilities! Every time I order it's sold out and has not arrived in our local stores. What a truly inspiring work of art! Sending hugs!

ReplyDeleteYou knock my socks off Anne! This is stunning and I would love to see it with the candle on! Are you using it in your home? I am now going to refer to you as the "technique queen" - not only do you thrive on 3D, you are sooooo good with textures and different techniques to create them!

A great idea and I love your choice of colour too. I have to admit to wandering round the pound shops every now and again looking for useful plaques and boxes - the problem is I don't always have time to make anything with them!! Off to see what everyone else has made. Elaine xx

ReplyDeleteWowzer - this is an absolute stunner, Anne. I always love your ATBs, but this goes even one better... I can just imagine how satisfying the weight must be as you pick up the wooden block. Amazing altering - your industrial grunge rust effects look glorious on Seth's die-cuts, especially with the teal behind. Love this so much!

ReplyDeleteAmazing project Anne!! What a clever idea, using a seed planter to create a candle/night light holder, you've just given me a whole bunch of patio lighting ideas!! The colours are so perfect for the rusted patina feel of this, and your techniques for creating the eroded textures are so amazing! The square die set was a great choice, very industrial yet still cozy! Wonderful work Anne, thanks for the inspiration! hugs :)

Thank you for posting this! I belong to a Junk Journal FB Group where most are happy to post their beauties but pretty closed mouth about telling others how the did something. This is lovely and I’ve been wanting to know how to get that rust Look affect. You’re so incredible! I for one thank you for your information and tips. Each of us will have our own talents, some will never be able to duplicate the true beauty of others, but we can hope to play and experiment with it. Do you know what product gives depth? When I saw her cover it looked similar to some of Andy Skinners creations, which I think he uses this product line too. Again, this is beautiful and you are amazing!!! Thank you!
