I really am bringing up the rear with this weeks effort for Sunday Stampers where the theme is 'Shiny'. The challenge is run by the lovely Hels Sheridan (http://pinkleart.blogspot.co.uk) who has created the most wonderful piece this week. Please so check it out if you have not already done so.
August is the busiest month for me for birthday cards, both for family and also commissions so my feet have not touched the floor for a while now. In addition to that, a friend of a friend saw some of my canvases and asked if I would make her one. Well, I was delighted until I asked her what colours she would like. "I don't want anything colourful or fancy and I don't want any words on it". Do you have a colour preference, I ask? "Oh yes, cream, beige and a touch of silver". OK, I thought, I can do basic and bland..........it is a lot harder than you think. This is what I created. I have a feeling that she may not like the background........

I coloured the base canvas with cream emulsion paint that I found in the garage. I stamped the polka dots on and did the lines with some mocha acrylic paint mixed with white to bring the colour down. The flowers are created using die cut flowers soaked with water and scrunched up and they have a very liberal coat of perfect pearls to make then really, really shiny, but the light is so bad today it does not really show up. The stems and leaves are just freehand on some mat silver card. I added a strip of corrugated card which I distressed with picket fence distress stain. The edges of the canvas have flitter glue and sterling silver mega flakes by Indigoblu applied but again it does not show up well - sorry! The final touch was a small silver coloured charm and some beige string from my stash.
Shame about the bland bit because I have just got a new DVD by Trish Latimer called Create with Paint and it is a wonderful adventure into colour and paint techniques and I was just itching to make this piece more colourful....ah well, the customer gets what the customer wants.

You could never make anything that could possibly be classed as 'bland'! It may not be colourful but it is still gorgeous! She will love it! I follow Trish too, her stuff is fab. ReplyDeleteOh Anne, I had to smile when you coined the phrase 'basic and bland':) We get used to seeing and using such fab colours but they seem to be so hard to take for many people. Bet if you use the techniques in that DVD and make colourful canvases you'll have people queuing around the block for them.
ReplyDeleteBack to your canvas - it is far from basic. As you say, it is SOOOO hard to exercise self-restraint and focus on detail and execution. You have done that beautifully here.
BTW promise I was only pulling your leg about buttering up TH. Don't think there is a crafter out there who doesn't harbour that ambition to own one of everything to stroke! Guess what - I've got a Coredinations Distress Pad that will get used, one day, when I'm good enough and I can bear ripping into it!!! OK, I know! I'm sad!

ReplyDeleteYou know me and colour, Anne, but there are times when neutrals really appeal to me! Sometimes one needs a "colour fast" (and I don't mean colour that doesn't run - just a fast from colour lol!). I think your neutral piece is beautiful - very subtle and understated.
ReplyDeleteI always prefer to do what I want (don't we all) but sometimes when someone else asks you to do something, you end up being stretched, maybe into an area you think you don't like, and it can be a very pleasant surprise how much one enjoys it, and learns from it!!
Thanks for your nice comment - I'll take a Paralympics Gold if that's all the same to you lol lol! I'm having a bit of a rest today, although I feel surprisingly all right after all that effort yesterday! My hubby, being his normal typical glass-half-empty self, didn't say a word when he came in, but asked what I was going to do with all the stuff on the landing. Later I said to him he hadn't said what he thought of my efforts and how my ARTHaven was now looking, and he said "Very nice" in a totally unconvinced way! When I took him up on this, he said, "But you've still got so much stuff in there." Honestly, I can't win! Men... I think I need at least a silver medal for putting up with this sort of thing!!!
I'm beginning to wonder if my parents' house will ever sell... It's such a lovely character cottage with loads of good features, potential for development etc. It's a bad time all round. We're going for another viewing on Monday but my hubby and I did a reccy this afternoon and although the inside of the house is probably everything we'd want, it's in a much too built up area and I can see my parents not liking it at all... Got to keep looking, I suppose.

ReplyDeleteHow do you adhere your stems? May at WOYWW suggested I make a canvas of some of Rae's pressed flowers for my Playhouse wall, but I haven't a clue how to do that. I'm sure there are sites I can Goggle. I should send you some and commission you to do the work!!

Anne it's really beautiful though, I love the silvery edges. You've done a fantastic job. I've done a cream canvas too, but it won't be going on the blog for a while as it's a DT piece for September. Soon though. You can get your colour fix now by doing a really bright one. Michelle x
