A Vintage Journey - Use A Portrait

I know that Christmas is now a distant memory but it is still winter and I love the Found Relative portrait of the boy with skates, so I have used him in my piece for S@ndy's wonderful challenge at A Vintage Journey - Use a Portrait.

The piece is quite dimensional, I wanted to create a proper frame that would stand up.  I used Tim Holtz's Pocket Watch Frame die for the base and cut several more but adding the Sized Circle die to the middle so that it created an actual frame that I could glue to the base.

The layers were stacked up, glued and I covered the whole of the frame with Gesso and then a layer of  Picket Fence Crackle Paint.  Once the paint was dry I sprayed the parts with Broken China Distress Spray Stain.  I brushed it lightly to ensure it that the stain got into all the cracks.

The snowflake was made using Tim Holtz's new Stacked Snowflake die.  These were coated with Clear Rock Candy Distress Paint.  I added a gum drop which had been coloured with Alcohol Ink.

After mounting the Found Relative card I added a layer of acetate and rubbed some Christmas Remnant Rub snowflakes.  I also added my favourite embellishment from Tim's last release, the fabulous Idea-ology vintage Ice Skates.

I did add lots of layers to the frame and to finish off the edge I cut a piece of card to 1/2", gave it the same treatment as the rest of the frame and (painstakingly) glued it all around the edge to give a neater finish.    Tim's Easel die was a little too big for the stand so I just folded some extra thick card and made a little stand.  The finishing touch was an Idea-ology snowflake which had been dabbed with Picket fence Distress Paint.

    Wow Anne! I can't believe how thick you made this pocket watch! Love the light blue crackle - it truly makes it seem 'shivery' with the cold snowflakes! The skates are the perfect adornment for this wonderful vintage skater photo!

    Love your pocket watch picture frame Anne. You have given it a real wintery look with the crackle paint, it looks just like a layer of ice crystals.I like how you added the rub on snowflakes to the acetate and the stacked snowflake embellishment too.Hugs Lottie x

    Your frame is spot on for a winter freeze look. Having never been in snow myself, this makes me feel the cold with the flakes and the colours. I particularly love the chain holding the snowflake which links to the metal of the skates at the bottom, such a well balanced and beautiful project!

    Firstly wow... I love this as a frame and what you've done, the crackle is just divine, along with the crisp, cool wintery feel it gives. Secondly, I'm so glad I bought this die before Christmas in the CVC sale. This was the reason why I wanted it, to do a frame.     This is just brilliant, with those adorable metal skates as embellies. I always enjoy reading your creative journey nearly as much as I love seeing your final result. The way you approach the project, thinking of how to use your supplies to create the piece, just astounds me. And then your skill at following through to the last finishing detail (gluing on the round trim would have had me in fits!). What a terrific use of the 'old photo' to display it in the watch stand!     Hi Anne! I'm sorry I haven't been by lately :( I think all of the end of year/first of the year excitement had me a bit frazzled, but I've gotten myself under control now ;) :) -maybe :)
    This pocket watch creation is super darling!! And yes--it is still winter!! We're covered in icy snow here and our local ice rinks (lakes/ponds) are finally freezing over for ice skating!! This young gent would certainly be invited to bring his skates over for a twirl or two :) Just darling and a wonderful inspiration project for AVJ :)
