What is Art?

Hello Blog Friends

I would like to say a big welcome to my latest followers, thank you so much, it means a lot that you are interested in my crafty journey.  Thank you too, to those of you who have taken the time to leave comments on my last few posts, you have made my heart smile!

I don't have a great deal of experience with Embossing Paste with masks but I got a Crafters Workshop mask a while back, called 'Mini Art Is' and I thought I would have a play with it this weekend, when I was allowed a break from clearing out the garage.......

The words are perfect for all Crafters and I really like the style of the writing:

I created a background on a 6" x 6" flat canvas, with pink, cream and white acrylic paints and then applied black embossing paste through the mask.  Not as easy as it sounds but if you hold the mask down with some masking tape, it does make things easier.  I mounted the canvas onto some strong black card, to give a lift to the words.

Well I couldn't leave it at one so I did another larger 8" x 8" canvas and this time I used Fresco Paints in Mermaid and Beach Hut to colour the main canvas (I am in love with these paints).  I added some torn book pages and chicken wire stamping with black acrylic paint.  The topper was coloured in Mermaid, Beach Hut and Limelight and then swiped over with Peacock Feather Distress Ink. I then spritzed and flicked water over, before applying the black embossing paste.  I mounted it onto black card and then onto white card, again to give the words a lift and then mounted the topper onto my canvas.

So then I tried a third time, this time with white paste on a black background.  This is probably the most effective but I have not mounted this one as yet, but I thought it would be good to let you make a comparison.  The photos were taken this evening so the white looks a little cream but in real life it is a crisp white:

Hope you all had a good weekend, it is back into the garage for me tomorrow,  we are nearly finished, thank goodness, I really miss my Craft Room.  Hugs, Anne x

Footnote, just in case the words are not clear, they say:

Art is just another way of expressing our innermost thoughts onto concrete media.  Where form and function come together in beauty, color and shape.  We put our feelings and experiences onto paper, canvas, surfaces of all kinds.  Allowing ourselves to release and surrender to this all encompassing force.  This need to register what was today what might be tomorrow.  And what was yesterday and the day before that.

  1. Anne, all three are lovely. I am delighted by how clear the words came out. I didn't expect that at all. Such a great passage. I really love the middle one with the chicken wire stamping and those lovely Fresco colours although all three have such appeal.

  3. These are really brilliant canvases, Annie! You went to town with the beautiful chicken wire one!! I'm wondering: is embossing paste the same as what I call embossing powder? It looks similar in the finished product, but I'm not sure, as I don't know anything about embossing either way onto canvas. Don't overdo the physical labor clearing out the garage!! xxoo Darnell

  6. Hope the garage sorting out and moving stuff is going well. take care though as it sounds like heavy work.

These are so lovely the last one is my fave...that look is so in style now! But it is sure a close second with the middle one. I want to learn to make those painted.inked backgrounds. I am slowly building my supply of TH inks and stains so I can eventually give these a try! I have a stash of canvass under the stairs to try them on!

    Yours are so lovely!

  12. Hi Anne,
These are gorgeous, the quote is fab and I love the white on black, so striking. Can't wait to see it when it's finished. Great job with the embossing paste too, the finish is perfect. Have a good week, hope the garage is tidy soon then you can get back to your craft room. xx

  14. I'm guessing that perhaps Embossing Paste is like the stuff used with the Dreamweaver stencils...but not certain. You do come up with the most unusual medias -(at least to me) - to try on your art, and it is always stunning. This one is no exception. I tried very hard (looking several times) to pick a favorite. Not an easy task on a Monday morning, let me say. I'm leaning towards the middle blue, (blue is my favorite color perhaps!), but the blacks are so dramatic. I've not worked with canvas either, but saw canvas used at the show Sat. (was a whole new dimension to me as well-LOL). You've done an outstanding trio of canvas art...thanks for sharing. Have a great week, and don't work too hard in the cleanup. Hugs

the quote is so poignant. It's a question we ponder over so often but never get a perfect answer!.

  18. I bet that was a very satisfying or gratifying bit of crafting time amidst all the clean-out. This has been one of my favorite stencils in 6X6, and I just got the large 12X12 over the weekend. Happy Crafting, Anne. Hope the clean-out is progressing well.

  19. These are brilliant Anne! Love the colours on the second one, but I am really loving the black and white...the words are great too. I saw Ali Reeve on TV last week make her own paste with cornflour...gotta have a go at that! Carole Z X

  20. Wow Anne...these are lovely and I bet its not as easy as it looks, stenciling with writing must be tricky.

I think my favourite is the black and white..............look forward to seeing what you do with it.

Hope you get back crafting soon. xx

  21. Wow, it's hard to believe this clear image was from a stencil and paste! and not stamped. I love the wording too. The white on black one is so clean and clear to read perfectly. Now I must get me some of this paste, and the mask too.

  26. I also love the white on black, but I think it's the canvas that wins for me (I'll wait to see the mounting of the white on black before I make my final decision, obviously!!)... Love the Fresco colours you've used, and the chicken wire in black is a lovely echo of the text. Isn't the detail you can get with the embossing paste wonderful?! Beautiful work all round...
